Digital Currency Tax Reporting Forms

What form will my digital currency transactions be reported on?

Digital asset transactions will be reported on several forms depending on the type of transaction. [1]

  • Form 1099-DA: Starting in 2025, brokers will report sales of digital assets
  • Form 1099-K: For cryptocurrency exchange transactions exceeding $5,000 in 2024
  • Form 1099-MISC: For rewards/fees of $600+ from cryptocurrency services
  • Form 1099-NEC: For payments over $600 for services
  • Form W-2: For cryptocurrency paid as wages
  • Form 8300: For cash/digital asset transactions over $10,000
  • Form 8949: For reporting capital gains/losses from trading or selling cryptocurrency [2]

Note that the new Form 1099-DA reporting requirements begin with tax year 2025, with cost basis reporting starting in 2026. [3]
