Posted on 09/12/2025 ← Back to TaxBert's Tax Talk
Does the IRS accept paper checks?

Yes, the IRS does accept paper checks for tax payments.

Payment Requirements:

When paying by check or money order, make it payable to "United States Treasury" and include the following information on the payment: "2024 Form 1040" (or the appropriate form and year), your name, address, daytime phone number, and the Social Security Number shown first on the return [1].

Important Notes:

You should enclose Form 1040-V, Payment Voucher, with your payment, but do not attach the payment or Form 1040-V to your tax return. Also, never send cash [1].

Future Changes:

Be aware that an Executive Order signed on March 25, 2025, mandates that effective September 30, 2025, the federal government will cease issuing paper checks for all disbursements, including tax refunds. Additionally, payments made to the federal government, such as taxes, must be processed electronically where permissible under existing law [2]. Exceptions will be made for people without banking or electronic payment access and certain other special cases [2].
